Yesterday nearly 3,000 delegates at the 60th Biennial National Conference of the Fraternal Order of Police in Salt Lake City, Utah cast their ballots to select their organization's leaders for the next two years. Chuck Canterbury was successfully re-elected in a contested race.
"I am honored and humbled that the delegates have again givenme their trust to lead this great organization for another two years," Canterbury said. "As an organization, we are stronger now and ready for the fights that lie ahead."
Canterbury, a 25-year veteran of the Horry County Police Department in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has served on the Grand Lodge Executive Board since 1995 and is now beginning his fifth term as National President. "There is a lot of work ahead of us," Canterbury said. "Never before have our rankand-file officers been faced with such determined assaults on their rights. The worsening economic situation is putting tremendous pressure on local, State and Federal budgets and politicians are looking to cut corners even with issues like public
safety."
Also re-elected to the National Executive Board by the membership in Salt Lake City were National Secretary Patrick Yoes of Louisiana, who was re-elected to a third term in a contested race. National Treasurer Thomas Penoza of Delaware defeated his challenger and was re-elected to his seventh term. Edward Brannigan of New Jersey was elected as National Vice President, defeating David Hiller of Michigan. National Second Vice President Frank Gale of Colorado was unopposed and was re-elected. National Sergeant-at-Arms Tim Downs of Indiana stepped down from his position and will be replaced by Roger Mayberry of California, who won the contest race for the position. Joe Perkins, National Trustee from the Oklahoma State Lodge, was re- elected as the Chairman of the National Board of Trustees.
